What kind of shampoo can you use on a guinea pig2007-11-24 22:17:45

I'm planning on giving my guinea pig a bath this afternoon, since I haven't in quite some time. I was wondering if I could use my shampoo? I have dog shampoo, could I use that?

No, please don't use any other shampoo other then a specialy made guinea pig shampoo! I found a shampoo that is made for guinea pigs at: www.petco.com. Here is the link if you are interested:

As you can see, they are two different kinds, but, made by the same company! If you are new to giving your guinea pig a bath, I would recommend that you ask your vet maybe to show you how to give your guinea pig a bath some time. Yes it doesn't relay mater you are able to use human shampoo also (make shore it is no tears baby shampoo if u want to use human shampoo [jest think how much it would heart a little critter if it hearts you

You CAN use dog shampoo, but I recommend that you go to the petstore and buy special guinea pig shampoo. Dog shampoo may be too harsh on a guinea pig's skin, so they may have an allergic reaction. I used dog and cat shampoo on my piggy once, and he started coughing and wheezing. He's fine now, but I certainly don't want to experience that again. There's also spray and powders you can buy that you just put on your guinea pig to stop odour. They come in many different scents, and you don't even have to use water with them! "Smellin Good" is a really good one to buy.

NO Human or dog shampoo. They are both way to harsh for your pig. You can use small animal shampoo or kitten shampoo.

Don't use the dog shampoo, that will dry the piggies skin out to much. Go to the pet store and get one specifically for guinea pigs. Make sure that you don't give your piggy to many baths though because it will also dry their skin out.
