What newspapers are safe for rabbits and guinea pigs2007-11-24 22:17:49

I've heard that there's some sort of a natural antibacterial in either the paper itself or maybe it's an additive in the ink thats used for making black and white newsprint. Therefore it's said to be one of the best (and cheapest) animal litter options available.

I use newspaper underneath the wood shavings, in my case aspen. This means that I can just wrap the whole thing up. I would not use just newspaper as newspaper is not a very absorbent material.

An alternative is fleece, the following 2 sites are threads about fleece. I know the site is a guinea pig one but I am almost 100% sure that it should be fine for rabbits too:

Any newspaper's fine, but you should put the shavings on top, for warmth and for when they pee or poo, it will double layer and soak up all their mess. Most rodents are hard to toilet train so don't bet on it. But just like its healthy for rabbits and guinea pigs to eat grass, paper won;t hurt them, owner of altogether over 55 g pigs and 2 rabbits speaking here.

I gave up using newspaper since it just makes a mess when it gets wet, and the ink rubs off all over the rabbits. If you want to line the cage with paper then put shavings over it, thats okay, but otherwise it just gets chewed and shredded by the critter, and they end up with black feet since they sit on the paper all day!

Wood shavings are cheap, I'd just use them. But news paper wont hurt them.
