What pet should i get a gerbil or rat2007-11-24 22:17:51

I find rats are fun because you can feed them loads of things as treats next to their regular food--little pieces of bread, fruit, veggies, drops of milk, etc, and they'll do just fine (keep away from chocolate, though). Gerbils can eat fruits and veggies, and a little whole wheat bread, but their diet isn't quite as varied.

Just keep researching both, looking at their life-spans, average cost, needs, etc. Google is your friend ;D.

is this a necessary question??! i mean come on! rats are way better! they are cuter, more friendly, affordable, smarter, easier to handle, better patterns, fun to shop for, very few bite, grow to have the same personality as you, and have waaaaaayy cuter faces i have 2 and they are they are the LOVES of my life

I would say a rat. They're much more friendly and easier to tame. They seem to also enjoy handling more and are slower (and therefore easier to keep track of). However, they also only live one or two years while gerbils live one to five. I have two gerbils and they are two and a half though. And maybe it's just my gerbils, but they bite me a lot. Plus they chew everything in sight (including you) while rats don't (at least not as much).

As the having owned both gerbils at one time and now rats I can say that rats are better. If you are looking for a pet that's more social and likes to be handled and can almost act cat like in a way, go for a rat. Gerbils are neat but take a lot of time to hand tame. If you just want a rodent that you don't have to spend too much time with go with a gerbil. Gerbils like to be in pairs, just as rats do, but don't require as much handling and social interaction from you. Good luck with your choice!
