What r the pros and cons of a guinea pig and a hampster2007-11-24 22:17:18

My friend is giving away her guinea pig for free

but I need to know which one is cheeper, easier to take care of stuff like that

I agree with Livvie - Hannah does have it all WRONG with guinea pigs! She probably has only owned hamsters and never guineas! I had 5 of mine in my room at night and they never kept me awake... they SLEEP at night wheras hamsters are AWAKE at night. Most people like the chatters they make IN THE DAY TIME (NEVER at night)!

A hamster will be cheaper and easier because they require less food, water and less space. Having said that though, I have 11 guinea pigs and we are coping fine with costs -- we certainly aren't rich.

Also guinea pigs need to be kept in pairs or groups so only get a guinea pig if you are going to get TWO. Certain breeds of hamsters can (and have to) live alone.

Guinea pigs rarely bite (I've never been bitten) but I looked after ONE hamster and that did bite. So if you are afraid of biting, get guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs need a much bigger cage so if you don't have much space in your house, don't get guinea pigs.

Dont get a hamster...they BITE HARD and chew constantly. Guinea Pigs are much better. The price is about the same. The only things you need to know about pigs are that they need VItamin C. Their body doesnt produce it and feed fresh oranges or vit c drops in water. Its best to do the oranges. They can break their backs very easily so be careful while holding it. Hold its butt and support its back. Also they love alfapha chews and Timmy hay...very good for them. Hamsters dont like to be messed with that much. I cant name any good from them really. They both need places to hide and things to chew on like wooden block you can by at any petstore.
