What should you do if your hamster has wet tail2007-11-24 22:17:59

Some crust off of toast will help firm up the stools. Remember to clean the cage very very well so the hamster won't keep getting sick from the bacteria

Keep in mind that Dri-Tail and toast should be used only as a temporary measure, and you should take your hamster to the vet as soon as possible.

Good luck and keep us posted!

wet tail is a common yet very deadly condition for hamsters... not too many hamsters recover from wet tail as it is deadly and is most likely caused by stress [like when you first bring him home or if you suddenly change his food type or if he's not getting enough exercise because he doesn't have a wheel or if he's being picked up when he is not used to being held yet (you need to tame a hamster before you start picking them up) or not being handled/hand fed daily...for example, are common causes of stress in hamsters and stress causes wet tail]

I have had better results from using cabbage than the dry tail medicine...cabbage is a natural way of preventing and stopping wet tail in hamsters...go to the grocery store and pick up a fresh head of cabbage (less than $5 for one head is all you need)...feed the hamster a chunk of the fresh cabbage at room temp or cold (do not cook cabbage-store in air-tight bag/container in fridge)...do this everyday until the entire head of cabbage is gone

it's no garentee but it is your best bet short of going to the vets office (no offense to the people who said take the hammie to the vet, but even though we may take our hamsters to the vet-I don't know a single parent who would spend that kind of money on a $20 hamster...they'd rather buy their kid a new one than go to the vet! I'm not saying it's right, because I take my hammies to the vet, however I'm just tring to think realistically about what most parents would do...realistically most parents buy hamsters because they think hamsters are cheap, low maintance, and low commitment pets for kids...most of us know better than that however that is the honest reason most pet hamsters are bought for children...and that is also the reason most pet hamsters do not recieve the proper care they need)
