What things should I get for my hamster and what kind should I get2007-11-24 22:18:02

I'm getting a hamster in about a week. I already found a cage, but I need to know how to clean the cage, what kind of bedding I should get, and how I should choose my hamster. How should I do this?

*What kind of bedding- i have paper based stuff and i just put clean shreded paper in the corners for nesting DO NOT USE CEDAR BEDDING! it will cause lung infection

*How to clean the cage- about one week, give or take a couple of days, if you dont clean the cage enough you will be able to tell my 'burns' on the bottom of your hamsters feet from wet/soiled bedding. dump all the bedding out into a plastic bag for easy disposal. Fill bottom of cage with hot soapy water and let sit for a while and then scrub it out. Be sure to clean all the cage contents.

*What in the cage- a house just the size of your hammy for comfort, water bottle, food dish, lots of chew toys so the teeth dont get overgrown (make sure not to put the water bottle over anything, as it may drip and cause mold and such)

*How to choose a hamster- look for active ones in the pet shop, ask if you can hold it before you decide on getting it, watch to make sure it doesnt try to bite the pet shop persons hand when he tries to take it out.
