Sleeping box

running wheel

dry food

fresh fruit/veggies

Your hamster will prefer to live in a quiet place. Keep the cage away from drafts. I recomend cleaning your hamster's cage at least once a week. Hose it down. DO NOT USE CHEMICALS! Put new bedding in it every week. Make sure your hamster's cage doesn't have bars at the bottom. Also, make sure it is made out ot metel rather than plastice (he/she can chew through that) Congrtaz on your new addition to that family!! Good luck!!

I can tel you right away to use only a paper product litter like Caitter Care or Care Fresh. Never use any wood shavings or saw dust litters. They cause toxic fumes to be emitted when the hamster urinates and many are allergic to them. Both problems can cause respiratory infections and possible death.

Now when choosing, make sure the coat shines, the eyes and nose are clear with no sneezing, and that the bottom is dry and not wet or discolored (this will indicate an illnes in the hamster). Getting a male is better, they are less likely to nip much and they are never pregnant. We have 18 Syrians and 11 dwarfs. The Syrian males are far more laid back then the others no matter the color.

Here's a list of things to get for your hamster.

Behavioral Needs

Niches - provide hiding places and safety

Fun Ball - allows exercise outside of the cage safely

Exercise Wheel - allows exercise inside the cage
