What to do about my rats bloody eye2007-11-24 22:18:03

I have two rats and they usually don't fight but I think they may have been lately. One of my rats has a left bloody eye. In the mornings it has a little puddle in the corner and throughout the day it crusts around the eye. Sometimes she can't get it open. My mom won't pay for it to go to the vet becuase she says it's just a rat and we aren't going to waste $50 dollars on it. What should I do?

Answers:

porphyrin discharge is almost a definite sign of illness. Your rat needs to go to the vet to be checked out. Se probably has a respiratory infection which can ONLY be treated with antibiotics. Not treating a respiratory infection will only make it worse and cause the eventual death of the rat.

If you cannot afford the necessary care than you should not ave the pet in the first place. You may not want to hear this, but your mother is very irresponsible for allowing you to get a pet and not providing it with the proper care. Rats suffer no less than dogs when they are sick, and your mother should be ashamed in teaching you that the lives of somethings are not as important as others.

You should rehome this rat ASAP, since youor mother is not even willing to take the rat to the vet for a simple inexpensive ilnness, what happens if something bigger comes along.

I have had many pets(rat included) in my life, and like all people I wasn't over joyed at spending money for vet visits, but they were an understood and necessary part to pet care. Just like maintenance and gasoline are a necessary part of car ownership.

PAY FOR IT YOURSELF! The little guy needs to go to the vet. If you really cared about your rat, you would pay for this visit. You need to be a responsible pet owner or give your rats to someone that will take care of them. If you don't have the money to pay for it right now, ask your mom for a loan and offer to pay interest.
tell your mom to take it to the vet and pay the money and then work to gain it back ( washing cars, selling goods, etc.)
go to the local vet. sometimes it can be for free unless you buy something from them.
why would you even want a rat? not to mention two.
My rats used to get this all the time. I was very worried, but the red stuff sometimes seen around a rat's eyes and nose is called porphyrin. It is produced by a gland behind the eyeball and helps lubricate the eye. Porphyrin naturally drains from the eye down into the nose through a small tear duct. Small amounts of porphyrin seen every now and then are normal.
