What to do with a hamster2007-11-24 22:18:03

I would like to know what you are supposed to de with a hamster. Do you play with it, how many times a week do you clean it's cage, does it stink? And anything else you can think of please. Thanks. :)

At least once a week clean the cage, the more you handle a hamster the freindlier they are( my daughters sits on her shoulder while watching tv.). The dwarf type hamsters MUST be handled everyday or they revert to their wild instinct, larger types ie teddy bears and syrians tend to be more friendly. hamsters also need a wheel in their cage. they need things to chew (rodent teeth dont stop growing) so they can keep their teeth trimmed.

Well i have had hamsters for 5 years. I love hamsters they are very sweet, especially teddy bear hamsters. You play with them and their cage needs to be cleaned about once a week, they do start to smell if you don't clean their cage. When they start to smell make sure you clean them because they can die from their urine. Hamsters are great pets. Smaller hamsters tend to be a little nippier and not as sweet, you cant hold them very well. Teddy bear hamsters are the best in my opinion.

You can play with them a bit. They will learn to sit on your hand , some may learn a simple trick. Clean the cage weekly , a large cage may need only part of the bedding changed . If your hamster has a preferred potty area you may want to scoop that area more often. Its mainly the urine that smells.
