Answers:Not sure what you mean by "type." As for colors, that comes down to personal preference. As for sex of the gerbils, that's questionable. Each gerbil will have their own temperament and character, regardless of sex. Females are dominant in the species. Both males and females can eventually fight for dominance with same-sex cagemates, but not always. Both males and females will fight with the same sex over a mate. Females can be a bit moody, since they go through estrus cycles about every 5 days. Generally, males are more laid back. Females are generally more difficult to introduce to other females, compared to male to male intros. I had thought female groups were more likely to fight and declan, but now I'm hearing a lot of talk of male declannings. I've had pairs of males and females and, luckily, little to no fighting so far. IMO, females are a little more active and interesting and can be just as "nice" to their owners. My males have been mainly a little more calm and equally as "nice" as my females. I'd recommend getting gerbils from a good breeder, rather than a pet store as well, and from an American Gerbil Society registered breeder if you can. A lot of pet stores don't handle or tame their gerbils, so they aren't as nice. Their backgrounds, health issues, and amount of inbreeding are usually unknown, too. But, there might be a few and far between good shops out there. Let me know if you find them. You should do a lot of observing and questioning before actually taking them home. There aren't really too many different 'types' of gerbils at the pet store, however there are many different colors. All of my pet store gerbils have been very friendly, however if you're really worried, try getting one from a personal breeder where they'll be hand reared.
the only difference in the range of varieties is the physical appearance so go with whatever you like. i personally like mixes of black and white because each one is unique. you have asked alot of questions about gerbils, you must be very enthusiastic and i know you will be a great owner good luck x

as far as I have seen, they have one basic gerbil, and the colors are brown, or tan or white. they have em at petsmart and petco.
