and also since guinea pigs can be very skittish and fearful, I'd recommend a rabbit instead since they can be calmer for a small child to pet (even though both can be difficult for a child to handle since, if handled wrong, they will both be likely to try to squirm free). a kind of rabbit that i would recommend is a smaller rabbit called a Holland Lop that is very small, very cute, comes in many different colors, and is easily available. you can go to a rabbit show and easily get a baby for 5$, or you can go to a state or county fair to find someone who has what you're looking for. it is very sad sometimes to see that people are still saying that guinea pigs are good for small children when they are so easily frightened by them and are often left in a cage all day without a companion. but whatever your decision, please just research the animal and be there 100% of the time when your child isn't willing to care for it.

im sorry..but there are not many pets suitable for any age under 13 or 14.. they will not take care of it and it will die.. im not saying every kid would neglect it but majority of people will..

get a robo dog or tamagotchi or sumthen that cant die..

if they actually are responsible then get them some fish, hermit crabs, shrimps..sumthen like that..no mammals.

Like Justified I would be hesitant to get a guinea pig for a 9 year old kid unless there was a parent there to over see things, guinea pigs are very fragile and their spine is easily broken. After saying that my nephew is 10 and is very careful with my girls.

I would start with a short haired breed like a self (or a rex, a rex has slightly fluffier hair and are the largest breed), these are probably the most easiest to care for. They will need a brush about once a week, a wash hardly ever. The next step up would be something like an abbysian, these have slightly longer hair and sometimes need a bit of a bum trim, they need brushing more often too. The final step would be something like a peruavian, they need a brush every day, spot washes regularly and full blown washes often.
