What would be the best guinea pig to get male or female can you tell the difference in a baby
Is there a difference in temperament between male and female? and do you have to get them sterilized like a cat or dog to prevent it becoming aggressive? thanks
Answers:Just like any other animal, temperament really relies mostly on the individual pig's personality. I have two older males (boars) that I've had living together for not quite two years, and though they squabble from time to time, they get along just fine. It's a common misconception that males can't be kept together - the truth of the matter is, male or female, there is always a chance that down the road they'll decide they don't like each other, and then they have to be separated. Both males and females will establish dominance within their "herd," meaning that there will be lots of butt sniffing, mounting, rumblestrutting, and general "getting to know you" behavior. Once the hierarchy is established, life should settle into routine. My two boys have completely different personalities from each other, one being a snuggly pig, the other being more of a "let me explore" pig. There really isn't that much of a difference in caring for males and females, either. Boars do have a grease gland that sometimes can become stinky - it's just a little area on their rump that can get kind of matted...my one boar seems to have more of an issue with this than the other, and I wash his butt with bunny bath maybe once every six months or so.
