What would occur if i were to breed a yellow hamster with a "Panda" hamster2007-11-24 22:18:36

would I get a tortishell and white, or would i get others. if so what are the odds of each combination.

thank you.

Answers:

"Panda" hamster - do you mean a Black Banded hamster?

If I haven't in mind that the hamsters can carry recessive genes, which are hidden and can show only on the offspring, so:

Black Banded female x Yellow male: all females Golden Tortoiseshell, all males Golden

Black Banded male x Yellow female: all females Golden Tortoiseshell, all males Yellow

There might be Banded pups in both cases.

But remember, hidden recessives there can act too.

You will get a cross-breed of hamsters
You would get an unholy super beast.
You would get WAAAAAAY too many hamsters to take care of, leading to even more unwanted pets.

Leave the breeding to the breeders, and just enjoy your pet.

The answer is it could look like any combination. The animals have a diverse background and the fathers genes will be prevalent.
you will get a mixture of breeds, and color will be dependant on the parents as well.

Good Luck :)

It depends on which color genes are dominant and which are recessive. You could end up with any combination.
it would probly turn out some would be panda hams and some wouold be the other colors and some will mix the colors togethers. sorry if this was confusing.
It could be many combinations.

Check out this site:

On some of the colors it tells whether the particular gene is dominant or recessive.

I don't know much about genetics, but according to this site, the yellow color gene is dominant. And the black gene is recessive. However, the banded gene is dominant. (a "Panda" is actually a black banded.)

Sorry if that sounds confusing. Hope I helped.

BTW, on Peggy's answer it says that the males and females will be separate colors/patterns. That's not true. Gender doesn't make any difference to what a hamster will look like. (As far as coloring and such goes.)
