A gerbil. They dont bite as much but other than that their about the same.

A rat is better than either. They're smarter, less moody, and much better pets overall.

Hamsters are tempermental little cusses, and they wake up in a bad mood every time. They are incurably nocturnal (a rat will adjust to your schedule), and will make noise all night, chewing on things, running on their wheel, etc. Also, they pee a lot, and their cages always stink because of it.

Gerbils don't smell as bad (they don't drink or pee as much), but they run away, frequently. They have a nasty habit of running off your hand, or off a table, bed, or sofa, hitting the floor and disappearing. They're definitely the more intelligent of the two, though. Just don't let it get away from you, the first few weeks.

Mice are also better pets than hamsters and gerbils, although my favorites are still rats.

Rat.

Rats don't smell as bad, they don't bite. They are affectionate, they actually WANT to be with you. They are trainable.

They are minature dogs with BIG personalities!

Rats actually do smell quite strong, and are much higher maintenance than a hamster or gerbil. Also, they are more expensive because they need larger housing and can rack up the vet bills. If you're looking for an affordable, lower maintenance pet, I would say get a teddy bear hamster or mouse. They are easy, fun pets.

I prefer hamster, they are smaller and much cuter.i had 8 and i really did enjoy their company.when i 1st bought them,they are really shy and often hides in tunnels but when we pat them and call their names softly,they will grow to like you!
