gerbils love to chew, so one of the best ways to make them happy is toilet papter rollers, kleenex, and any kind of box. you can also put a trace of peanut butter in a tight spot, this encourages them to be active.

Toys! There are LOTS of really cheap bird toys you can buy for rodents like little balls with bells in them or little bird bathtubs that gerbil can sleep in or chew. I would definitely get him some little chewing blocks too.

Also feed him a treat every day! Make it a routine, small animals love that.

In the morning when you wake up, get him a baby carrot. Then when you get home from work or school, give him another little thing, and then one more before bed. It gives them something to look forward to and they learn their routine very quickly.

Berries, a cheerio, baby carrot, frozen pea, or you can buy these things called Yogurt Drops from the pet store and they love them.

I keep hamsters, and they love stuff that they can make sleeping places with, like alfalfa hay or tissue paper. Toilet paper rolls are good too.

Give him some little branches from a fruit tree, just make sure that there are no bugs on them.
