Whats a salt lick for2007-11-24 22:18:40

sorry if it's a stupid question but i've never heard of a hamster having a salt lick.

Answers:

it gives them minerals they need

It provides them with minerals and other nutrients that their body needs to be healthy.
A SALT LICK IS FOR HORSES.IT HAS VITAMINS AND NUTRIENTS
It has minerals like sodium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and iron. Animals need this to help grow bone and muscle. Its for horses, goats, deer, and other animals like that. I don't think hamsters need salt licks.
there are smaller salt licks available for small caged animals.. ussually its in the shape of a wheel.

It provides some extra nutrients and minerals that your pet needs.

as stated earlier, the salt lick is for supplementing minerals and other nutrients that a captive animal may not be getting in captivity. I know rodents will gnaw on things like animal bones for the calcium and the nutrients in the marrow, and this doubles as a tooth grinder, as well. A 'salt' wheel for a rodent is probably nutrients that it can attack if it feels low, or if it feels long toothed. They also make edible houses and gnaw sticks of bone for similar reasons. The reason it is referred to as a salt lick, is that is how animals will try take in salt, which helps regulate water usage in the body and balance other chemicals out. Knowing this, farmers, etc, started adding to the salt to come up with a painless way to administer healthy doses of 'good stuff'.
a salt lick provides nutrients and minerals for the animal and an easy way to give it.
essential minerals
it gives the hamster nutrients it doesn't get from its food.
its a circular chunk of salt for small animals to lick somtimes (but most animals dont need them)
Hamsters don't need a salt lick. Hamsters are omnivores, meaning they eat plant and animal matter (like bugs, meat, cheese, etc). The animal matter gives them the nutrients they need from the salt lick. Only herbivorous animals like horses, rabbits, etc need a salt lick for those minerals. It won't hurt to offer your hamster a salt lick; if he uses it, it means he's lacking those things in his diet (and you should adjust his diet!); but most won't even use them because they get those minerals from their food.
It is to make sure that your hampster does not get dehidrated. The salt makes them thristy so they drink as much as they should! Not a stupid question! Hope this helps you out a bit!
My rabbit had one. It provides them with essential minerals. it also stopped my rabbit from biting our fingers because she could sense the salt on our skin. Make sure you always have water available for your hamster though as it makes them thirsty.
