Whats the difference between dwarf and syrian hamsters2007-11-24 22:18:12

I know that dwarf are obviously smaller, but is there a difference in how to look after them etc etc

Answers:

Yes they are seperate species.

If you get 2 from the same litter dwarfs can be kept in pairs.

Syrians (aka Golden Hamsters) must be kept alone as sooner or later 2 sharing a cage will fight to the death.

On the other hand dwarf hamsters can be a little more inclined to bite than Syrians.

I have 2 dwarf hamsters and have had 2 syrian hamsters before. The dwarfs definetly are harder to take care of. They bite more, and they are a lot smaller so they are harder to handle. I definetly like the syrians better! I hope that this helps!

~Very hard to catch if they escape

Pluses in dwarf hamsters

~Very Cute

~dont require as much space

~or as much food

~2 can live together, and they wont fight to the death like serians

I personally like the dwarf hamsters personality better because they are very spunky and crazy, but if its your first hamster, then id reccomend a serian, because they are much nicer, slower, easier to hold, not as crazy

Ive owned both hamsters over the past few years, and the serians are always little sweet babys, and the dwarfs are tiny midget crazy things
