Well, there are several different subspecies of hamsters. They can be large like the European hamsters, or they can be tiny like the Roborovski hamsters. Gerbils are generally, just one species and you can distinguish gerbils from other rodents by their posture (they tend to stand on their hinds legs) and their very long tails. Hamsters have very short tails and keep all paws firmly on the ground 98% of the time.

Gerbils are smaller than rats, but bigger than mice. They have furry tails, and just look odd compared to mice and rats. Gerbils jumped into the pet scene later than mice and rats, too.

A lot of people don't realize the differences between mice and rats -- Rats are hunters and mice are actually a food soure for rats. Mice are more passive and easy to care for; rats are highly intelligent and affectionate pets that need lots of time. Rats don't get along easily in big colonies like mice.
