Whats wrong with my friends guinea pig2007-11-24 22:18:15

My friend's guinea pig is acting really weird. He's bringing his cheeks back and making clicking noises with his teeth. He looks like he needs to throw up. He's also sticking his tongue out. I have a guinea pig at home and he never does this. My friend's guinea pig is 2 and a half months old and he is a male. My friend has no other guinea pigs besides him. What should she do? What's he doing? Please help! Looking for best answer with lots of information and detail! Thanks!

That doesn't sound good. Be SURE the piggie is still eating and drinking. If not, you'll need to handfeed him until you can get him to the vet, which should be very quickly.

From the description you gave, it sounds to me like he has something stuck in the back of his mouth. Guinea pigs' mouths are very small, so it takes some special instruments called buccal pad separators & a qualified vet to see all the way back there.

It could also be teeth issues. Does the piggie eat plenty of hay to keep his teeth worn down?

Could be a number of things but teeth issues come immediately to mind. Is he still able to eat and drink ok? He needs to see a cavy-savvy vet for a complete examination-including his teeth.

The best thing to do would be to take it to a vet.

It could have something stuck in its mouth. Guinea pigs have teeth that continually grow, its teeth could be too long and might need to be trimmed. It could be something to do with its stomach or digestive tract.

That doesn't sound normal for a g. pig and needs to be seen by a doctor. Better to have it taken care of now rather than later when if might possibly develop something more serious.
