Whats wrong with my gerbils stomach2007-11-24 22:18:15

My brother's gerbil has a large scab-thing on his stomch. It looks a little raw and we noticed that it got bigger from the last time we saw it. The gerbil is about 3 yrs. old. My brother's friends told him that that's what happened to their gerbils and then the gerbils died...what's going on?

Answers:

Male gerbils have a large scent glad on their stomachs. They like to rub and drag this glad over everything and it can become inflamed and infected. I'd take him to the vet.

im really sorry to tell u this but i think it is a cancer of some sort. my 1 3/4 year old hamster had the same thing and died after about 2 months of having it. when small rodents are old like that they usually get sick very easily. we just put peroxide on it to keep it sort of clean. but it would be best to call or visit a vet and talk to them about it and they will probably tell u wat to do.
