Whats wrong with my guinea pig2007-11-24 22:18:15

I just noticed today that he is having trouble walking. His movements are kind of jerky and he seems unsure about his whereabouts. I think it could be neurological. Could I be right?

Your concern that your cavy has suffered some neurological damage, could very well be true. Sometimes a pig suffers from a stroke (not common, as they are more prone to heart attacks), their body will contort, from the waist up, at a 45 degree angle, while their head will sometimes collapse and then revert back up to a normal position. You would also see a change in his eyes with a stroke: they will point to the inner-corner of the eye, then rapidly jerk back to the central position, repeatedly.

Peter Gurney will suggest what to do, IF this is a stroke or heart attack, along with some suggestions. Peter's knowledge with these loving souls is endless, and could give you an idea of what you may or may not be dealing with.

My personal recommendation, after having guinea pigs for over 15 years and breeding Skinny Pigs (hairless), would be to take him to your Vet for an assessment a.s.a.p., especially if his walking and confusion doesn't improve.

They only way to find out is for you to take him to the vet. I've had several guinea pigs and they are very temperamental. I say that because I had one break its leg and it lived for about 2 days after that. How long have you had the guinea pig? If you haven't had him very long, take him back to where you got him and let them know what is going on.

Your pig needs to see a vet. My pig started acting that way when his kidneys were failing. It could also be neurological. Is he getting adequate vitamin C in his diet? Hope things work out with him...Good luck...
