Whats wrong with my hamster
I JUST got a hamter. I brought it home about an hour ago. I got a dwarf hamster because my friend had one and her dwarf hamster looked so adorable and it was so nice that I got one too. But since I got one, I try to pick it up, and it keeps biting me. I tried petting it and handfeeding it, but it keeps trying to bite me and it just tries its hardest to jump out of my hand. That's never happened to me before with an animal. I've never had a dog, cat, etc. bite me...I'm always really nice with animals and I love them, so why does my hamster not trust me? Will she ever stop biting me?
Answers:Some dwarf hamster can be very temperamental. I have always found them to be a bit nasty, but that is simple my opinion. I knew someone with a very friendly one, but when I was younger I used to work in a pet store and ours were all mean.
You need to give the little guy some time to adjust, a few days at least. You have taken him from a familiar home and placed him in a new, strange place. He is going to be scared. Allow him to get used to him home.
You may not want to grab the hamster, as you do not want to associate your hands with something scary. Try feeding treats(no too many, or he may get sick), but a few pieces of fruit.
You have to look at this from the hamsters perspective. He is an animal and unaware that you are not a threat. The fact that you love animals and are nice does not matter to him. To him you are a large unfamiliar thing that is trying to grab him. His instincts tell him to bite and run away.
