Whats wrong with my hamster2007-11-24 22:18:42

It has been losing weight for the past few days, and it keeps sleeping. Also, it is not eating properly anymore ... it only feeds on veggies now. More recently, it makes loud gasping sounds periodically. Btw, my hamster is quite old (about 2 yrs old).

Hamsters only live about 2 years. 3 is very old, and I've never had one hit 4.

Make her comfortable and give her whatever food she wants. It probably won't be long before she leaves you.

It sounds like your hamster is either sick with something, or just getting old. Two years is really old for a little rodent. Mostly they sleep during the day anyway but if he sleeps even more he might just be old and tired. You might want to take him to a vet to see what's wrong with him, but make sure he's comfortable. Is it cold in your house?

This could honestly be anything, but it sounds like it's sick. I would take it to the vet. I've already lost one hamster after I didn't take notice to the continuous clicking noise of my hamster. If your hamster's behavior has changed drastically, it's very likely it either got injured or got sick. You can also consider that your hamster is quite old, but I would still take it to the vet.

He could be old, but it could also be something else.

You should really take him to the vet. He could b suffering with a respiratory problem, etc. If nothing else it may be more humabe to allow the vet to euthenize him instead of letting him suffer.
