Whats wrong with my hamster2007-11-24 22:18:16
My baby Benny is just laying around his cage but hes not asleep.Benny is not fat,or old what is wrong wih him???We recently got him a new cage and now he seens to be sick or something!!
Answers:he may just be scared. like when you move into a new house, it takes a while to get settled and accept it. try to make him feel more comfortable.
Hampsters can get ill very quickly. Some live a long time (up to 5 years) and others just don't stick around long. Make sure he has access to food and water easily in his new cage. Sometimes it takes them a few days to get accustomed to their new home.
HE PR0LLY JUS D0ESNT KN0W WHAT IT iS.. GET HiM USED T0 iT.. BUT S0ME 0F HiS 0LD T0YS iNT0 THE NEW CAGE..
check his tail and see if it is wet or appears stained. if so then get to your local pet store and pick up a product called wet tail. it is for diarrhea in rodent pets. Hamsters, I have found to be very susseptible to diarhea any stress can bring it on as well as to much wet/fresh foods. it is a very good product to keep on hand as "wettail" as the illness is called can take a hamster to deaths door very fast. The instructions say to put it in their water, however depending on how serios their condition, I have found getting a few drops full stength into their mouth in addition to their water is very effective. please let me know how he is I am always on yahoo messenger under chassii
You should bring him to a small animal vet.
The new cage probably has nothing to do with it. He might be suffering from wet tail, as it causes lethargy. Check his tail area to see if it's wet, or check his feces to see if it's soft or soiled.
well, theres a desiease called wet tail and you should check his tail and see if it's wet. if it's not mabye its not getting enough food or water. or it could be suffering from a skin condition because of the bedding it has. if it has wet tail or has a skin problem, take it to the vet to get some antibiotics.
he's not used to his new place.
he is proberley home sick, your hamster had settled in to his old cage and sented it of himself. he is missing what he thought was his home . you need to reashore him that his suroundings are the same and you are still there. try talking to him and get him out of his cage for a cuddle, it will take a while but will get better. if things still proceed then ask a vet.
Debra, did you take Benny to the vet. Often times Hammies will get a condition called wettail, which is the same as diarrea, untill you can get him to a small animal vet, keep his bedding clean and make sure he has plenty of water. This condition can be caused from stress and since you just got him a new cage that may be it but only a small animal vet can say for sure and prescribe the antibiotics he will need. Try that and good luck.
Perhaps the new cage is bigger or draftier making the new environment chillier and encouraging the hamster to go into hibernation mode?
Try increasing the temperature in the the room or giving your hamster some more shelter.
Your pet may also be lethargic due to a illness or infection that a trip to your local vet could help diagnose.
good luck!
