When can I start to pick up my new hamster2007-11-24 22:18:17

I just bought him today.

Answers:

Do NOT touch him the day you get him. The next day talk to him softly and pet him while talking to him if he allows if not try again the next day. Be patient with your little guy. Then put a peice of food on your hand and let him take it If he doesn't take it try again later. NEVER DISTURBE A SLEEPING HAMSTER OR HE WILL BITE! if he won't let you touch him get a cup put it into his cage and let him crawl into it scoop the cup up and put your hand over the top. bring him to the bath tub. ( make sure the bath tub has no water, cleaned out, dry, and the plug is down) go in the tub and put sloly put the cub on its side and make sure the hamster comes out then remove the cup and let him run around. He will get used to your scent. Do that for 10 minutes. Then put the cup in the tub and let your hamster crawl in it or put it by him and hopefully he will walk in it. Do that every day for 10 minutes untill he lets you pick him up. O and try hand feed him untill he takes it. Another thing is you should talk to him while he is in the tub.

you can pick him up when ever u r ready. just let him sniff your hand. and make sure u cup your hand around him. but i have 4 so i thought i should answer your question.

If you live a thousands miles away I would start now it's a long drive. Just joking pick it up anytime just be gentle.

When you get a new hamster you want to let them adapt to thier new enviroment. So let him/her for 3/4 days. do not pick him/her up or pet him/her. They have gone through so much change already. The stress is bad for thier little bodies and could kill them! I worked at 3 different petstore jobs.

Give it a day or two to get used to the new surroundings. If it is stressed it will bite. Even once it is used to the new cage it may still bite. Hamsters have differing personalities, just like people. Some are really mellow, some never learn not to nip the hand that feeds them.
