When changing a hamsters bedding2007-11-24 22:18:17

is there anything you can do to get them used to being in there? because i just put new stuff in my baby dwarf hamster's cage and she's been acting weird like she's in a new cage even though she's in the same one - i just cleaned it. is there anything i can do to get her used to it?

If you just give her time, she'll get used to it.

I've had at least 100 hamsters in my life (I used to breed them) and sometimes they get weird about it when you clean their cages. Other times, it doesn't bother them at all. O_o

I usually don't use soap, though. I just scrub it really well with hot water, and after I put the cage back the way it was, I take a small bit of the old bedding and put it in the cage so that it smells relatively the same as before.

Also, if you got your hamster a new toy, try washing it off.

I've noticed that most of my hamsters are slightly afraid of their new toys sometimes because it smells like the store...The weird "walmart" smell. lol But usually after I rinse it off, they're fine.

No.it is essentially a brand new home to them. When you take it out you take away all their smells. Most rodents have really bad eyesight so they mainly rely on smells and touch. When I clean out my rat cage they spend hours checking the place out. Same with my chameleon and my snake. They have to wander around stinking the place up to get used to it again.

i've had to hamsters and they will normaly act a little weird after cleaning the cage they just want it to feel like it was like before you cleaned it

Did you use a strong cleanser when you cleaned it? They are very sensitive to detergents (smells). I use to keep mine in a spare cage for a day while the main tank "aired out".
