When do you think I should be able to hold my hamster2007-11-24 22:18:17

1. I just bought a male teddy bear hamster. When I picked him out at the pet shop, he jumped right out of the worker's hands. Thankfully, she caught him. I tried to hold him but he's way to scared. If I hold him, i'm afraid he'll bite me and/or jump out of my hands. Sorry for asking this but ii'm a first time hamster owner.

2. Also, do hamster bites hurt? I heard they do. And I wanna let my 11 year old cousin hold a hamster at the pet shop but i'm afraid if it bites her, she'll get hurt.

Answers:

1. Don't worry. If you don't wanna get bit, get some gloves and wear them for the first few times while you handle your hamster. That way, it won't hurt! Also, keeping your hamster low to the ground when you hold her, will help with any injuries that your hamster could have after being dropped, if dropped. Also, hold your hamster over a box, that way, she won't be able get away if she jumps out of your hands!

2. Like I said in the first answer, you can have your cousin hold your hamster with the gloves. Also, hamster bites don't hurt too bad. Though, they can draw blood. It really depends on how strong someone's pain threshold (sorry, not the best speller!) is. It only hurts like a pinch.
