When its night my hamster keeps on biting the top of the cage2007-11-24 22:18:21

Is this normal

Is he just trying to keep his teeth down

or is he scared, mad...

he looks pretty healthy

Don't worry, your hamster is perfectly healthy. they do that practically every night. all my hamsters did that. it is to keep their teeth from being too long. if your hamster's teeth is too long, it will bend in and cause more pain to ur hamster. you might want 2 get them some chewing rocks as well but i think its not really neccessary.

When it's night, is it dark where he is? He might be scared of the dark. Try a night light.

Hamsters are noctornal, so most of their activity will occur during the night.

If your hamster is chewing on the cage it could be because it wants to keep its teeth down, try providing it safe chew toys (such as the ones you can buy at the store, or soft untreated wood).

Also, if you have a plastic cage (possibly habitrail) it may be its means of trying to escape.

Try giving your hamster pleanty of things to do in the cage, chew toys, tubes on the cage, a wheel etc and it should stop.

It's very normal. Hamsters are nocturnal, so he needs things to keep him busy at night. A wheel, chew sticks, tunnels, paper towel tubes, anything. He may still continue to gnaw at the top of his cage, trying to get out too!

This is completely normal. Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active at night. I wouldn't recommend chicken bones, becausethey splinter and can pierce his internal organs. Get him some rodent chew sticks, you can find them at almost all pet stores and sometimes even grocery stores that have a pet section. If the noise is keeping you from sleeping, you can try putting mustard on the places where he's chewing.
