Where should I get my gerbil2007-11-24 22:19:02

Yesterday, my dad and brother went to a pet shop to get a gerbil. Today, we're going to buy him a companion. I wanted to get one at the animal shelter (I'm pretty sure they do have them at the animal shelter). They claim that he'll want a sibling from the pet shop, and that the shop takes better care of them, whereas the animal shelter will apparently have "diseased, rabid animals". I believe this is untrue, but they stick to their story. Where should I get the gerbil at?

GO to that website and type in there were you are from and it will tell you the cloest animal shelter and it will say if they have any gerbils for you!

pet shop I would think...animal shelter have mostly dogs and cats...unless you want to adpot a cat or kitten as companion to your gerbil.

That's a great idea to try the shelter!! They are screened better than a pet shop. A pet shop usually gets there pets from any body. Do you think they are going to take the proper time to quarantine, vet check, etc...? this is an unwanted expense on their part. If you get it from a pet shop, get a guarantee so you can replace it if it gets sick or dies. Unfortunately, at the shelter, you won't get that kind of guarantee, but your giving the little guy a chance for a good life.

Shelters actually tend to take better care of their animals--I visited a shelter near where I live, and it was amazing! They played with all their animals, gave them fresh bedding and large, roomy cages, fed them well, and walked the dogs daily. Whereas the pet store nearest to us keeps the animals in small, glass-paned habitats with poor ventilation, and with no handling whatsoever.
