ETA: No exercise balls, like Russie suggested! Guinea pig spines are fragile and they can be easily harmed in them. No leashes either.

Guinea pigs are great little pets that are easy to care for, and can be friendly and very cute.

However - don't get a male and female together unless one of them is neutered, as they have lots of babies.

You can get a guinea pig from a rescue home, and they usually expect a donation (in the UK about 拢15 per piggie, which I think is about $25) or you can buy one from a pet store. Make sure your piggie has nice bright eyes when you buy it, that its fur feels clean and smooth and that its clean around its tail end.

I have 2 guinea pigs, both female - they were abandoned when the mum was pregnant, and I rehomed the mum and the daughter. the son and dad were also rehomed together. I looked into getting the boys neutered and rehoming them too, but it was really expensive. Mine live in an outdoor hutch during the summer months, but when it gets really cold and there's frost (ie December to March) they come indoors in a smaller cage. During the summer and when it's dry I put them out in a run on our lawn for most of the day, so they mainly eat grass, and in the hutch they mainly have hay. They also need a dry feed, water at all times, and regular selection of veggies. Guinea pigs can't make their own vitamin C like rabbits, so it's important you give them a good selection of veg like cucumber, cabbage, carrot, spinach etc. But be wary of lettuce as it can be a bit strong and give your piggies diarrhoea. Mine are fine on a few leaves now and then!Apples can also give them mouth ulcers - however, my old piggies loved apples, my new guys hate them...
