I would say that if you feel that you will enjoy your piggies even on the days you least feel like cleaning their hutch, or taking them outside, bringing them in, cleaning their water bottles, or any of the other regular chores, then go for it. I love mine, and although my kids are still too small to really take responsibility for them, I am getting them to do more gradually.
(Oh and check if you know how you'll care for them when you go on holiday - just trying to arrange a little holiday for mine, while we're away at the end of the month! You might have a friend who wouldn't mind them coming over...)
Just to add - don't know what the weather is like where you are, but in the south of England, most guinea pigs live outdoors and are healthy and happy to do so until the wind picks up and the temperature drops in the winter.
i used to have a guinea pig and if you are getting them for young children i dont recommened a guinea pig i recommened a rat they arent high maintnence and are very sweet they also have pretty markings and are inexpenssive i have 2 and i love them they seem to have personalities better than any other type of pet i know good luck!

be prepared for babies if you get one of each, I would start out by getting a hamster, you only need one, and the upkeep is cheaper.
If you get guinea pigs, get two females. A male and female will breed, and you will have lots of babies to deal with. Also, guinea pig breeding is very risky to your female. You have to time the first litter just right or you will kill her. You have a very narrow window to breed a female before her pelvic bones fuse together for life. If she gets pregnant after this happens, the babies die inside her and she will die a painful death along with her babies. Best to leave breeding to people who know what they are doing.
