No, they're certaintly not doomed! I would never resort to putting them in the garage though, they're likely to be forgotten and catch a cold from the draft. They have really bad asthma. Is there any way that you can make a certain room your "guinea pig" room? Maybe a guest room, so you could close the door without worrying that your dog can go in and out as he pleases. What kind of cage do you have? If you have a C&C cage, seen at http://www.guineapigcages.com , they are really sturdy if you make a top, so perhaps the dog would be discouraged with a top on it.

Put them in the freezer. You can open the door oncce a day if you are worried about the dark.
C&C cages rule! The bigger the cage, the less you need to clean it out. Small cages are like big litter boxes. No good at all! You can also build a top for your C&C cage. I have a dauchshund so I have my cages on tables (long folding tables) and have a lid on them.
*A shelf or a dresser is not a big enough space for an adequate cage.
