My kids (ages 4 and 6) both have rats right now. They get them out with supervision, and niether of them have been bitten either.
In my opinion, mice are great if you want a pet to watch. But if you want one to play with and interact with, get a rat or two.
Rats!! You can teach them to come to your kissing sounds! They are really sweet!! Easy to keep.
I have never owned mice but currently we have 3 female rats. They are so smart and easy to care for. We have litter box trained 2 of them (1 could care less) this helps keep odor minimal. In fact female rats don't stink if you keep the cage clean. Ours are always cleaning themselves and each other. You can train them to do tricks or just ride around on your shoulder. I highly recommend rats but get 2 same sex ones because they are very social and can entertain each other while you are away.

Rats. I have had both and rats are smarter and seem to show affection to you much better.

I decided on a rat.
Mice are more fun to watch, but rats are loving, cuddly, you can teach them treats, they learn their names, you can play LOTS of games!
Males are more relaxed and cuddly, females are energetic and playful.
Whatever you get, be sure to get more than one, these rodents are very social animals.
