Which gender of hamster makes the best pet FEMALE OR MALE2007-11-24 22:19:37

i am thinking of getting one but i don't no which gender is better? HELP!

In the end, it does not matter. Most pet store employees actually mis-identify the gender of hamsters (its kinda hard to tell, especially with younger ones), so if you ask for a girl, you might get a boy or vice versa.

If you do get a female, be ready to deal with a potential pregnancy, birth, and baby hamsters. Because pet stores mis-identify hamsters, they often keep males and females in the same cages, and the cute tiny little hamster you buy might be pregnant!

Females have more mild personalities so are less prone to bite and easier to tame. When I had a female hammy she was the sweetest, cuddliest little thing. Males can be tamed as well, but my personal preference is female hamsters.

Theoretically are males much calmer and easier to tame. Females have motherly instinct and that makes them more active. But there are exceptions. So just choose the tammiest hamster in a pet shop. Another thing is you can bring a pregnant female from the pet shop.

I've had both. Females are not quite as gentle as males, and can bite more. Males tend to be calmer, and a lot happier being hand held. I would go with a male. All male hamsters I have had were really great.
