The plastic kind with a flat surface. You shouldn't get one with metal rims because their limbs can get caught in it, causing them to break. You can fix that easily by covering them with carboard. Anyway, to fix the whole plastic biting thing, there's always the wheels that are plastic-glass-ish that hamsters can't really bite. Like the "Silent Spinner".
A metal wheel, that attaches to the cage. Hamsters tend to chew up the plastic ones or the wheel tips easily, if it's not attached to the cage.
The ball like one. It closes completely with no spaces where their legs can get caught in. It has it's own stand so suitable for any cage. It looks like the balls you get which they can run freely around in, accept it stays in one place. They absolutely love these and they are very safe.
get the plastic ones. metal ones are bad. my hammy broke his leg using the ones with gaps inbetween.
Plastic & Silent. Wire wheels can be dangerous if your hamster likes to run fast. As for the silent part, heavy hamsters (who also run fast) tend to make noises while running in a plastic wheel (whether hooked onto the cage or not).
Get the plastic silent spinner.
It doesn't make noise at night and your hamster will really enjoy it...

Well i have a big one on the critter trail dazzle! And my hamster loves it! He evens sleeps in it!
I use a plastic wheel because they don't make as much noise as the metal ones. And an metal wheel is dangerous for a hamster because they can trap their limbs in the holes and injure them selfs.
I use a nine inch mesh metal wheel attached to the top of the cage. She can not chew it up, or otherwise destroy, ruin, or ingest it.
She can not break her leg because the mesh is too close together to fit a leg in there.
She can not hurt her back because the wheel is large enough for her to keep her back fairly straight.
The wheel does squeak after a while, so I keep the hinges its on oiled with Crisco oil.
