I have had many different kinds of pet, but hamsters were my least favourite. He was the worst pet ever. He looked sweet, but he bit a LOT and came out mainly at night. He also had no tail, which looked quite ugly.
I never had a gerbil. But anything is vbetter than a hamster. Why not go with a rat? They rock! They are social and much more intelligent than most rodents. They learn their name, will sit on your shoulder and are big and tough.
I would say a Hamster, They live longer I think.. Some are really cute are easy to handle and are very entertaining!!
It's like asking which is better - dogs or cats. Everyone has a personal preference, and each of the animals have their own personality.
I'm not an expert on gerbils; I've never kept them. I have had hamsters for some time and I quite like them. They are nocturnal, they do take some time to tame down, but once they are tame, they can be quite friendly. My hamsters generally come to me when I open the cage door.

HAMSTERS!! DEFINITeLY!! i had a hamster, and i loved him to death. gerbils aren't as friendly, and hamsters are really friendly and cute! i had a hamster for a year and a half and he was great. hamsters can climb up tubes too. they love it. i suggest u get a hamster and if you need a new cage go to about any pet store. they'll have one. get a wheel too, they need their excercise. Be careful with a wired cage. my friend once had a hamster get his head stuck in between the bars. so make sure there's little spaces!! GOOD LUCK!!
I have had many gerbils and they make GREAT pets. with hamsters you can only have one because there not social animals but gerbils are very social
NIETHER!!! Rats are much beter because they dont bit and the cage is about as much as a hamster cage, thier the same expense exept they dont bite and thier a lot more socail, you can teach them tricks to if your really patient, I taught mine to monkey bar across the cieling with a little patience and some treats.
