Chinchillas- good pets, EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN! and are really high maintenance!(yes i know redundant...

i think hamsters are easiest :)

Well considering, that you dont want a large cage go with a hamster or gerbil. they have much smaller cages. Although chinchillas have more personality and bond with their owners and to me, are MUCH MORE fun to take care of. oh the accesories you can buy for their cages :D they're really adorable as well. you can get attached to one in only a matter of months! i mean REALLY attached. it sounds to me like you have everything ready to get a chinchilla- (if you do get one that is!) just make sure you get one from a good breeder- not a pet shop which most of the time carry illnesses, or females may already be pregnant! Also they're not "extremely expensive" some breeders will sell you one for under $50, and if make the right descisions, then you wont be spending much.

ps. i live in london at the moment and i dont remember how much they sell them for typically -sometimes $100, but that depends on the breeder. dont let them rip you off!
