why neither? don't gerbils need sand? i heard if their noses have red in them that means they need a sand bath.
Neither.. the sand can get irritate their nose causing porphyrin (red gunk) to show around their nose and eyes.
A gerbil should have either woodchips (not cedar or pine!) or carefresh, or a similar bedding to dig in.
