Which is better for a hamster
is it better to put a litter pan in a hamster's cage or just let it go where it pleases?
Answers:there are advantages of having a litter for hamsters:
1) easier to clean
2) easier to check if your hammie is sick (poop and pee check)
a litter pan isn't what i would use though... maybe a bottle turned to its side. you can put some of the soiled bedding there and your hammie can be induced to use the bottle as the toilet.
having said that, you are still not assured that your hamster will use it all the time. my hamster usually have a particular place where he pees (his wheel actually). and the poop thing... that just goes where he wants it to go.
whether you decide to have a hamster toilet or not, the important thing is you clean the cage once a week. good luck!
Hampsters don't tend to use litter pans. The only caged animal that I know that do are rabbits. The hampster will go where ever it pleases reguardless if you have a litter pan or not. If you don't want the cage to smell and be as messy then scoop out the bedding that is really messy and replace it with a little bit of new bedding and clean the whole cage once a week!
Despite the products they offer, rodents simply don't potty train. He will poo where he pleases, usually in a corner away from him food.
Well, it's really up to you! If your hamster's cage stinks by the time you have to clean it, then I would recommend a litter pan. This way, you can clean it out each other day (or each day!), so then the urine doesn't stink up the cage. But, if your hamster's cage doesn't really stink when it's time to clean the cage, then, it's really up to you!
