If you have the heart, money, and time to research the requirements AND you find one in a shelter, then I agree with you getting a hairless one. Otherwise, I hope you do not get one.

These poor piggies should not be bred. They are often sickly & require specific attention. If you can give a good home to a homeless one, please do so, but don't "buy" one.

I have had both but i would say i liked the shorthaired because there easyer to take care of.

Get a 'regular' guinea pig (preferably 2). Hairless ones take a LOT more time and care (and money for vet care). I would not recommend one to a beginner.

I have to agree with Justified. Hairless guinea pigs are sickly and need alot of specific requirements eg they can not be housed outside.

Why don't you look into getting a long haired guinea pig? If your family has allergies than this is the way to go. Why? The long haired varieties do not shed half as much as the short haired varities. The long haired type will need to be groomed more often and are more susceptible to heat stroke so it is better if you keep them inside.

The short haired varieties are recommended for first time owners as they do not need as much care as either the hairless or the long haired.

In the end it is your choice.
