i found a website that said a 58 qt. tub with proper vinalation is better than a cage for a hamster. what do u think? i want the best..when and if i get a hamster!! thanks!

do you know what kind of hamsters you want? for dwarves, the tub is ok but ventilation is a problem and sometimes it becomes harder for you to interact with them. however, you won't have to worry about drafts. hamsters are prone to get sick when exposed to drafts. and escaping is usually not problem with these types of cages.

the problem with wire cages is if you get a dwarf hamster --- they're very tiny and they can hurt themselves if their feet slips into the metal bottom. the plastic bottom should be ok.

i do not recommend those cages with tubes because they're a little complicated to wash and clean. also some (not all) of them can be flimsy and may let your hammie escape.

i have the crittertrail outlook cage... which is somewhat a cross between a tub and a plastic one. it is ok for both dwarves and syrians.

also if you want to research more about hamsters you should go to petwebsite --- they have wonderful articles and forums for hamsters.

Nope, I would say a large and roomy cage with small bar spacing is better. Easier to see them and interact with them and they don't feel like the walls are completely solid.

My friend kept a hamster in a large tub with a wire lid and she was very unsociable and scared of things around her as she couldn't really see anything, and they moved her into a cage and she became extremely tame and confident.
