Which lettuce is good for guinea pigs2007-11-24 22:19:42

I heard that lettuce can cause diarrhea, but my and friends guinea pig loves lettuce and they are both okay. which lettuce is okay and which not? I'm getting confused cause guinea pigs are picky in food.

Romaine and red leaf lettuce are fine for guineas. However, you can't feed them too much as lettuce provides little nutrition value, and acts as a diuretic, causing liver problems!!

We used to always feed our guinea pigs lettuce, but it is true that too much is not good for them at all as lettuce is mostly water.

I'd recommend only feeding them lettuce occassionally, as a treat.

Try other veges such as carrots, corn and always have fresh seed for them. :)

I have been advised to include this in the list of things that should be fed to Guinea Pigs on a regular basis. It is said to give them strong teeth and a shiny coat. The lady who wrote to me said she gave her Guinea Pigs 3 heads a day to eat in thier diet.

Carrots: I would say they are not over keen on carrots. However I find out of most of the fresh vegetables these do tend to keep well in the fridge. When you can buy carrots with the leaves still attached you should because they like the leaves too.
