Which makes a better pet: Hamsters or Gerbils & why2007-11-24 22:19:43

Which do you think is a better pet and why? What are the pro's and cons about each?

If you have personal experience with either/both of these animals that would be helpful also!

Answers:

I've had hamsters and gerbils all my life and I found Gerbils were more interesting animals as they are active in the daytime whereas hamsters are nocturnal and gerbils also like to live in groups or else they get lonely. I had a gerbil that got very lonely after her cagemate died so she was withdrawn and died soon after =( so if you get gerbils get a couple of them, but hamsters prefer to be solitary so you can have a better relatioship with them. I found hamsters bite less than gerbils and larger species of hamster are better to hold as they dont run off as much as syrian or dwarf hamsters or any gerbils. One more thing, if you do get gerbils dont get indian gerbils as they are quite aggressive to people other than their owner (including their cagemates!) and sometimes their owner too... yes i do have scars!! =D

Gerbils in my opinion. They just tend to be nicer in temperment and they smell better too.

Gerbils.

They live in families so they will "bond" better to you.

They are smart too, they'll learn tricks.

Hamsters are solitary animals, meaning they don't like roomates, they don't like humans, and they want to be left alone. They have no interest in you, or cuddling, or the tricks you want to practice.
