However, rats have about the same intelligence as a small dog. They will interact with you. They will react to your presence and you'll actually catch yourself gaping a few times wondering "Did that just happen?" cos they are really clever.

Guinea pigs were originally raised for food and indeed in Peru today many houses still keep them in the kitchen to be fattened on vegetable waste. So don't believe anyone telling you rats aren't meant to be pets. They are.

I've had both of them and love both the guinea pigs and rats but if I have to choose one animal, I'd say the rat earned my respect because I never counted on them being so clever.

I had 2 rats and they bit me!!

I have 11 guinea pigs and have never been bitten!!

Need I say more? Guinea pigs are better!

Oh...oh... and my rats were MUCH smellier - people complained about them lol! Guinea pigs can be bathed so they don't smell and they shouldn't if they have a big, clean cage.

Rats make the best pets as far as rodents go. They are naturally cleaner, well behaved, and they live longer. Rats are also very social and loving. My sister's got one that she carries everywhere. they make great pets.

well i have 2 rats, and they are the bets pet that i have ever had. they are fun, cute sweet, every thing that is good in a pet. i would have to say get a rat. the only bad thing about rats is that they don't live long, they only live at an average of 3-4 years.
