Never ever use cedar chips - they are poisonious to a guinea pig.

any one of those, except cedar. Cedar irritates Guinea pig's eyes, and it is poisonous to them. Oh, and give Peanut a hug for me!

What I do for my guinea pigs, which works really well, doesn't smell and doesn't get dusty up their little nose is this:

layer of newspaper at the bottom of the hutch (when I clean it out, I just lift up the whole lot and roll up the paper to throw it away), then a thick layer (2 inches or so) of untreated wood shavings. In the bed area (my hutch has a separate compartment) I just put a big handful or two of hay, so they have something yum to nibble on when they're all curled up. I add to the hay most days, and clean out the whole hutch once a week.

They seem very happy, and clean this way - the good thing about wood shavings is that when they run around, they kick the shavings over their poos, so it doesn't sit on the surface.

Also - I go to a local farm and buy a bale of hay which I split and share with a friend for her bunnies / guinea pigs. I also go to a tack yard (for horses) and buy a big block of shavings which I share between two dustbins, as it lasts a lot longer and costs loads less.

Kiln dried pine (not regular pine), Aspen, Carefresh, and fleece.. are all the most popular and safest bedding for your pig.

Out of those beddings I would recommend aspen, it has no aromatic-oils, soaks up the urine and is generally easy to maintain. Carefresh is dusty and has been known to cause respiratory problems. Alternatively you can use fleece, I have just started using it and already have fantastic results. I did not have to buy it as I found a left over sheet in the closet, you have to wash it a couple of times, then cut it to fit your cage. What fleece does is whicks it to the bottom of the cage so underneath the fleece you need some newspaper and towels/puppy pads to soak up the urine. By using fleece Peanut will not be running through his own urine. Every couple of days you have to shake the poops, every week you will have to wash the fleece and towels but other than that it is great.
