Rats can be wonderful companions. They're smart, friendly & a lot of fun. Please adopt 2 or more of the same gender so they won't be lonely when you aren't there. If there's a small animal rescue near you, check it out. Our multi-species family includes 6 rats: 2 boys we adopted from a rescue & 4 girls from various places.

Hammie. Small, dont smell too bad, easy maintenance, and are usually laid back and friendly. I found mine by the side of the POOL, for God's sake!, and he's awesome. Just clean out the cage every week and attach a wheel to his cage

Guinneas never shut up. I knew someone who breeds the little devils. They aren't even that cute, really. Hamsters are at least small and soft and dont make noise (Well, almost never. Mine sometimes hiccups, but its sooo cuuuuuute!!). Guinneas also smell sumthin' awfull

Rabbits are huge and are way higher maintenance. Smell bad, too.

Rats are cool. I'd recommend I rat, I guess. They're smart, can be taught tricks, etc. But they smell horrible

So, in conclusion, rat or hammie. Go with your personality

Well this is my experience...

My 2 rats ran away from me and hid in their box when I walked into the room. Once I caught them they would bite... and that hurt like hell!! They weren't nice pets at all, apart from they would climb on our shoulders.
