Well it really is up to you. If you can't decide which gender to get i would try holding male and female at the petstore and see which one is more calm!!!

I suggest a girl gerbil because the boys have very big testicles and are known to smell worse to especially there urine.

Neither, Gerbils are vermin, not pets, get a nice kitty or puppy.
Contrary to other people's advice I say male gerbils are much more likeable. In my experience female gerbils have very stinky poo. plus females are much more aggressive towards one another than males are

you should get a male because the female is know to get aggesive when they have babys and when they are pregnent
Boy rodents are usually friendlier but have a musky odor. Female rodents are more snappy and irritable but don't have as much odor.
