It all has to do with culture. The people is South America don't consider them pets. They are raised as food. They raise them just like we raise pigs, cows and many other animals for meat here.

If you were to go to India and asked for a steak, that would be an incredible insult because of their religion and culture.

Its not weird or gross, its just a different way of life.

Really there's no big deal if you look from another point. in korea they eat any kind of dog, and in my culture its normal like any other meat. however i REALLY wouldnt eat my dog! but cows can be pets too! just because they're pets doesnt mean they can't be meat. since we're american we think eating guinea pigs are gross :/ but just think in africa you would eat one if you had no food! (though i don't think there are cavies in africa!)

I think it's mean when someone mistreats and won't properly care for an animal.

Like most people said here, eating them is a cultural thing. And remember, they're not eating 'your' guinea pig.

Actually, no..I dont think its horrible. I dont eat meat, and I adore animals, but different cultures do different things. There are cultures where eating guinea pig is acceptable. I'm sure theres also cultures where they think "isnt it absolutely horrible that people eat beef/pork/chicken/fish, etc etc etc ..." Those are all animals too..but it's socially acceptable to eat them so nobody cares about that.

why is it any more different to eating any other meat?
