Why Did my Pregnant Rat Die Unexpectedly
I can't tell you what happened to your rat- your best bet would be to go to a vet and have a necropsy done-
**update following spaz's answer**
I never thought of pyometria-but while I was breeding cats I had this occur twice, and spaying was required to save the cats life.
Here's what alerted me to something being wrong-
smelly discharge from the vagina (blood combined with puss)
lathargy
excessive thirst-
often dehydration
fever
although your rat may not have presented with these symptoms- it is very likely it was in fact pyometria.
If it was pyometria your vet could tell when doing a necropsy.
Why not adopt a couple of babies? Humane society's and rescues have plenty that need a home- and instead of breeding a rat you still get to enjoy babies! Just a thought-
Here is some links on pyometria-

It's also better for your rats health and well-being if they live inside the home. Perhaps in your bedroom?

Well keeping your rats outside is probably not a great idea. Rats need to be homed inside or in a air conditioned shed at least. She could have been drinking alot because it was so hot outside. That is probably the reason she was throwing up too. Also you should not keep the males in with the females when they are pregnant or right after the birth the female will get pregnant again. Sorry for your loss...
