Why Is My Hamster Is Afraid Of Me

Well I got my (first and only) dwarf hamster about a month ago. The first day i got him i picked him up with my bare hands...which probably wasn't a good idea, so i let him stay in his cage for a whole week, then i picked him up out of his cage, and he bit me a couple times when i did that and fell back in his cage. So um i thought i might give it a little more time, now he comes in my hand, but i wear gloves for protection, but i thought hamsters were supposed to like stay still and the poor little guy is shaking trying to get out of my hand, what am i doing wrong? Any Tips?

Yes u r completely right. U should have not picked him up the 1st day. I would basically start over with him. He bites you uz he is afraid. U look huge to him. This is what I have done for all of my hammies.

1. Go into the room when he is up ( around 6- 12pm) and say his name and just talk to him quietly. Let him get used to your voice.

2. Next day do the same but open the cage this time but add a treat. They have yogies @ petsores which all of my hamsters loved. Especially the strawberry ones. Call his name while doing so. If he doesn't come leave the treat near him. If he starts walking near you keep beckoning him. As soon as he stops hand him a treat near him. Shut the cage door.

3. Today do the same thing. Repeat 2 until the hamster comes 2 u when feeding treats. When he comes try putting a treat on your hand near ur fingers. See if he will come and get it. If he does do not try 2 pick him up but just let him eat or store it. If he is afraid put your fingers near him and hold treat in hand. If he doesnt take it just drop it and shut the cage.
